The Psychology of Harry Potter: Houses of Hogwarts
When J. K. Rowling's popular series debuted, Potter fans clamored to find any evidence that they belonged in one of her imaginative Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house had its unique personality and signature, and soon, readers argued among themselves on why their houses were the best. The Sorting Hat not only opened a question that delved into our personalities, but also provided a deeper look into how we view ourselves, and how others view us. Jessica Tseang (founder of Little Geek Girls, owner of Girl on Geek) leads a frank discussion with Harry Potter experts Erik Amaya (Comic Book Resources, host of Tread Perilously), Adrienne Alwag-Aipia (founder of Los Angeles Dumbledore's Army), Jim Thompson (Esquire, Comic Book Historians Group), Dina Kampmeyer (Lady Steam cosplay), Dr. Janina Scarlet (Superhero Therapy), and Dr. Travis Langley (Captain America vs. Iron Man: Freedom, Security, Psychology) on why J. K. Rowling's houses are secretly genius, and what we can learn about ourselves along the way.

Comic Book Law School® 'Help Me Help You'
Creative passion and keen business sense don't always go hand in hand, and that's one of the reasons why so many creators will often put off taking steps to protect their rights. But with an ever-growing appetite for new content and rapid-fire advancements in technology for delivering that content to customers, it has never been more important for creators to "get their ducks in a row" as soon as they can to protect themselves and their creations. But luckily, creators have their own Defenders they can turn to—and not just Jennifer Walters and Matt Murdock—as noted IP attorney Michael Lovitz, author of The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, returns to WonderCon Anaheim with the information you need to protect yourself and your creative capital. Comic Book Law School® tackles the basics of protection and ownership of ideas, works of authorship, characters, names, and branding, giving creators information to help them protect their creative works from conception through publication and beyond. Attendees will participate in an interactive discussion about rights available to authors and creators under U.S. copyright and trademark laws, as well as some of the problems and pitfalls they may face, some important contract dos and don'ts, and (time permitting) digital and social media cautions and concerns. Please note: The Comic Book Law School seminars are designed to provide relevant information and practice tips to practicing attorneys, as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend. However, the seminar is presented for information and entertainment purposes only, and the information presented and opinions expressed at the seminars do not constitute legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. Friday Pitch Review
If you're a writer or artist attending the Comic Creator Connection, this is your chance to practice giving your pitch before the networking event and get some free coaching from a pro. So what's a pitch? A pitch is simply the way you present yourself or your project to others. It is usually a brief speech designed to persuade and interest your listener in what you're doing or what you've made. Most creators have no trouble coming up with fantastic ideas for new comics, but they often struggle to talk clearly and concisely about those ideas to other people. Giving a good pitch is a vital skill you must have to bring your project to life. Fortunately, it's also a skill you can learn and improve with practice-and Pitch Review is a great place to do that. Pitch reviews will be conducted by Douglas Neff, an experienced presentation coach and professional public speaker, who also hosts the Comic Creator Connection. This is not a panel. Instead, these are 3- to 5-minute individual coaching sessions for as many people as can be accommodated in the scheduled time. Everyone is welcome, but please note that showing up is not a guarantee that you'll get a review session. Spaces are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.

2017: The Year of Blockbuster LARPs
2017 will be a banner year for LARP (Live Action Role Playing) in America due to the increased prevalence of "blockbuster" style events. A blockbuster LARP means high production values, high player count, and high cost to attend. These are usually a weekend long and at a remarkable location. After College of Wizardry ran a Harry Potter-inspired event at a medieval Polish castle, New World Magischola opened a western version based on original content at the University of Richmond in 2016 and the College of William and Mary in 2017. This year will also see Event Horizon, an original, richly detailed science fiction LARP near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco; Battleship, a historical LARP taking place aboard the USS New Jersey; Edgeworld, a stylized western town of gunslinging and intrigue; Dragon Thrones, a fantasy epic in the style of A Song of Ice and Fire at Bryn Mawr college; and Starship Selket: Wave One, occurring aboard the SS Lane Victory in San Pedro. See previews and get sneak peeks of these exciting, immersive, and interactive events. Presented by Aaron Vanek (Starship Selket: Wave One).

Comics Arts Conference #4: Do Genre Definitions Limit Comics Storytelling?
What part has genre played in the rise of comics and comics-related TV and film? We all know that different types of stories exist, from superhero tales to horror, science fiction, mysteries, and more, but at what point do those categories help stories reach fans and at what point do they become limiting? Was Watchmen just a superhero story? What about Captain America: Civil War, or Netflix superhero shows like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil that embrace wide-ranging social issues, gender issues, and much more? Christina Angel (Metropolitan State University of Denver), Hannah Means-Shannon (Neil Gaiman: The Early Years), and Ilan Mitchell-Smith (California State University, Long Beach) discuss the fan-embracing role that genres have played in the history and development of comics, and the ways in which assumptions about genre limitations may still stand in the way of comics and comics-based storytelling reaching their full potential.

Comics Arts Conference #5: Focus on Genevieve Valentine
CAC special guest Genevieve Valentine (Catwoman), author of the novels Mecahnique: A Tale of the Circus Tresaulti and Persona, writer of Batman and Robin Eternal and Xena, and winner of the Crawford Award, presents a talk: "'The Empire of a Wicked Woman': Catwoman, Comics, and the History of Power." Catwoman has been a lot of things in the last 75 years: thief, hero, crime lord, community advocate. But Selina Kyle isn't just Gotham's first moral gray area; she's part of a long tradition of women in power, both on the page and off-and there are some surprising parallels in how their stories are told. Valentine explores some elements of those narratives amid Catwoman's various incarnations, parallels, triumphs, and absences.

Sunday Pitch Review
Room 206B

Boss Monster—The retro-inspired dungeon-building card game from Brotherwise Games is designed for 2–4 players. Players compete to become the ultimate villain: the final boss at the end of a side-scrolling dungeon.
